HISTORY

The oldest tennis tournament in Poland — since 1968

It all began with a debt. Before the war, a young Bohdan Tomaszewski entered a junior tournament — and unexpectedly won it. Years later he put it plainly: „My tournament is, in a sense, a debt repaid for that event.” In 1968 he decided to create a competition for the youngest players and to support Polish tennis from the ground up. He kept at it for decades.

The tournament is played in the 16-and-under category and belongs to Tennis Europe Category I. More than half a century of history makes it the oldest tennis tournament in Poland and the largest event in Polish junior tennis. Around a hundred players from more than a dozen countries take part.

Names later known worldwide have passed through these courts. In 2004 both the singles and doubles titles went to Agnieszka Radwańska — later a Wimbledon finalist and one of the world's leading players. The best possible proof that giving young players a chance is worth it.

Under Tennis Europe and Polish Tennis Association rules, there is no prize money in a 16-and-under event. What is at stake are ranking points, diplomas and cups — among them a replica of the 1968 trophy, linking today's players with the very first edition.

In 2013 Bohdan Tomaszewski and his wife Izabella Sierakowska-Tomaszewska established the Foundation bearing his name. The patron died on 27 February 2015, but the tournament continues, as he wished. „I hope the tradition will be passed on like a baton in a relay race,” he said.

Today the event is organised by the Bohdan Tomaszewski Foundation, and young players from across Europe meet on the courts of Warszawianka. The 57th edition takes place in 2026.
