Tournament patron
A speech by Bohdan Tomaszewski (in Polish)
A legend of Polish journalism. He reported on the Olympic Games and world championships, and wrote numerous books and articles. Born in Warsaw on 10 August 1921.
„I stand before you with a cane instead of a racket, but I am still on the court,” Bohdan Tomaszewski used to joke during meetings with the players of the tournament that bears his name. He would recall how, before the war, he had entered a junior tournament himself — and unexpectedly won it. „My tournament is, in a sense, a debt repaid for that event. The idea of creating it in 1968 thrilled me and took hold of me completely. I never wondered then whether it would last a few years or a hundred. But now I hope the tradition will be passed on like a baton in a relay race.”
He was educated at the Staszic school. During the war he attended classes at the underground Warsaw School of Economics. He fought in the Warsaw Uprising as a Home Army soldier (codename „Mały”). After the capitulation he was sent to the camp in Pruszków. After the war he began working at „Kurier Szczeciński” and continued playing for SKT Szczecin. „The open centre court had no lines, the surface was ruined, and in the middle stood the wreck of a military vehicle bearing Luftwaffe markings. A trace of the war that had just ended. German prisoners helped us — eagerly, in fact — to restore that court to its full glory,” he recalled.
In 1948 he became a sports journalist at „Express Wieczorny” and moved to Warsaw. In 1955 he became a radio commentator, and later a television one. He commented on twelve summer and winter Olympic Games. He wrote „Dziesięć moich olimpiad”, „Wimbledon”, „Romantyczne mecze”, „Łączymy się ze stadionem”, „Proszę o klucz”, „Przeżyjmy to jeszcze raz” and „Do ostatniego tchu”. He was a member of the Polish Writers' Association.
He was most closely associated with Polish Radio. In 1972 he received the Diamond Microphone award „for individuality as a sports commentator and reporter”. He was given the Journalists' Laurel of the Association of Polish Journalists for „an unmatched model of journalistic professionalism”. In 2005 he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Bohdan Tomaszewski died on 27 February 2015.
